She Hits Pause
She Hits Pause is the studio name of photographer Matt Schwartz. I first came across his photos at a street art fair a few years back on the Upper West Side. I was immediately drawn to his work because of the vintage aesthetic of his photographs. Based on the East Coast, his shots range from the beaches of Santa Monica and Costa Rica to shots of urban flowers, both literally and figuratively, and some amazing shots of New York. All of his photos have a 1960's/70's beach feel to them; surfers, waves and pin-up girls. However, the first Polaroid I purchased was an abstract image of a tattooed arm in front of gilded wallpaper, really beautiful. Check out some of his images below.

Mediterranean Memories - Jackie O'
Warning: Be careful of the winds and the water! When the sea gets rough the waves crash over the stone barrier separating the bar from the water and needless to say there were a few very unhappy, saltwater drenched causalities…but a good laugh was had by my drunk ass.

Mediterranean Memories - Mykonos, Petasos Beach Resort & Spa, Elias Beach
I could have just spent every day around the pool and grounds of this beautiful property, but I guess I had to get out and explore the island a little. This was my second time to Mykonos, so I skipped many of the “must sees” that I did on my first trip, like Delos for example, an incredible archaeological island a short boat ride away…for any first time Mykonos traveler, Delos should not be missed. However, this trip was more about relaxing and doing nothing…well, nothing at the beach. The beautiful beach of choice this time was Elias Beach. There are many beaches around the entire island, of course. However, the three main beaches and the most well known are Paradise, Super Paradise and Elias. Luckily the crotchety old taxi boat that takes you to these beaches was only a few steps from my hotel, very convenient. Elias is the last stop on the beach boat and is where most of the gays tend to hang. There is a small sliver that is a nude beach and then the rest of the beach is covered in loungers, umbrellas and beautiful bodies. It’s fabulous! I spent almost every day at Elias Beach just because it has everything one needs...sun, sand, beautiful water, beachfront wait service and gorgeous views both around and on the beach…there was even a little old local that showed up with a wood tray full of freshly made donuts everyday…paradise! I would then jump back on the taxi boat to Petasos for my evening cocktail and sunset watching before getting ready for my night.
Of course my nights were spent in Mykonos town…and I will get to that in a later post. But if you’re looking for a true Mykonos resort paradise look no farther than Petasos Beach Resort & Spa…and Elias Beach …a jet-setters paradise!

Mediterranean Memories - Paros
However, my very favorite part of Paros, and, in my humble opinion, the best part of Paros is its tiny little island sister, Antiparos (‘anti’ meaning ‘across’ Paros). Less than one nautical mile across the sea from Paros, Antiparos is a gorgeous little gem of an island and is host to many celebrity homes (Tom Hanks has a vacation home here among many others). It is also a very big windsurfing destination as the calm waters and wind-filled air of the Aegean make for perfect surfing conditions. I’m not sure if it’s because of the celebrity vibe, the surf culture or just the magic of the Greek islands in general but Antiparos gives off such a current, hip and just plain cool vibe while still maintaining its old-world island charm. I think the island’s magic has to do with the low-key vibe of is residents and the beautiful surroundings in which they are lucky enough to lead their daily lives. There are of course beautiful beaches, a quaint little port and even a cave that’s more that 100 meters deep, but it’s the people that give Antiparos its vibe!
Paros and Antiparos are truly two of the most unique and beautiful of all the Cyclades Islands and I can’t wait to go back to discover more of the many hidden treasures on offer on these two jewels of the Aegean Sea!

Bansky Strikes Again!
Bansky, the British graffiti artist, political activist and all together super-cool-anonymous-dude, unveiled his latest prank/work of genius on the pier of the seaside town of Brighton in the U.K.; a coin operated dolphin ride for children…with a twist…the dolphin is jumping over a leaking barrel of BP oil. Brilliant.
Bansky, who has managed to keep his identity under wraps year after year, which is in and of itself an act of artistic greatness, has always found a way to express his politics artistically in a cool, unique and totally original way! Here are a few more of my favorites…

Kylie Minogue - Les Folies Tour 2011

Kylie is coming back for more!! I was ecstatic to hear the news today that Kylie Minogue will bring her upcoming Les Folies Tour 2011 to the states! I was fortunate enough to see her last year when she brought her For You, For Me Tour (her first North American tour EVER) to New York…and it was WELL worth the wait! The concert was incredibly unexpected as she crammed an arena sized show into the Hammerstein Ballroom…lit a match…and let the sparks fly! The super sexy ball of energy served up a show of all shows for the crazed crowd; entering on a giant shiny silver skull, like an alien from another planet, she showed America what we’ve been missing…a true showgirl!…not to mention her gaggle of god like dancers…ouch! It was definitely the highlight of my year, I was bouncing of the ceiling for days after that show! So, I was more than excited to read that she will bring her upcoming tour to support her latest, and in my humble opinion, most poptastic album, Aphrodite, to North America.
Here’s what she had to say:
“I’m coming back,” Kylie told Access on Wednesday, at a rehearsal for her “America’s Got Talent” performance. “Next year, 2011.” Kylie, who toured the U.S. for the first time ever in her over-20-year career in Fall 2009, said American fans are “unbelievable.” “Touring here was one of the best decisions,” she said. “There was so much love in the room – the fans were amazing.”
Bring it on, Kylie…America misses you!

You Better Work...

Alva Chinn was part of a defining moment in fashion history which took place on November 28, 1973 on the stage of the Opera House at the Sun King's Imperial Chateau in Versailles. Five American fashion designers were invited to show their work along with five French couturiers and for the first time ever the American designers included African American woman in their presentation, something never before seen on a Paris runway. According to NY Daily News photographer-Bill Cunningham, "The bejeweled Paris audience was stunned by the showmanship of the black models from America. The aristocrats were even thrilled.”… not to mention she was the first black woman to purchase a red Ferrari (not sure where that story came from or if it’s true, but its too fab not to include!)…AND Oscar De La Renta is her son’s godfather! So, needless to say the fact that I knew none of this, that she managed to keep her past a secret from me made me love her even more. I don’t know why she did, maybe she was embarrassed about how her life ended up, maybe for her those decedent memories weren’t fond ones, or maybe she was just a truly humble person who wanted to keep her past private. In any case, I never looked at her the same way again.
All of this has come to the forefront recently because of a new documentary about Halston called Ultrasuede: In Search of Halston (http://www.halstonmovie.com/). In the few preview clips available on the website there was my partner in crime, the ever glamorous super model Alva Chinn. I was instantly reminded of the story above and my brief obsession with this fascinating woman and her secret past. I’ve seen her a few times over the years on the street in passing. I never mentioned to her that I unlocked her secret, I didn’t need to. It had now become my secret.
Herbert List
I recently came across the incredibly beautiful and modern photographs of German photographer, Herbert List. Born in Hamburg, Germany in 1903, this incredibly prolific and, at the time, avant garde photographer ushered in much of the modern black and white photography we know today. His influence can be seen through the work of such artists as Herb Ritts, Bruce Weber and countless others. His love of the male figure is evident in his homoerotic photographs which capture both the romanticism and the innocence of youth. List was also fascinated with quasi-surrealism which can be seen in his experimental use of double exposure and surrealist imagery. Having traveled extensively throughout Italy and France shooting for such notable publications as Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue and Life List finally settled in Greece at the outbreak of WWII, which is where he shot some of his most beautiful work. There is a curious innocence to his photos that draws the viewer, or at least this viewer, in to his world, into the world of his subjects and in turn into the world of our own desires, dreams, fears and sexuality.
